SHEFFIELD MUM RAISES THE BAR FOLLOWING CANCER DIAGNOSIS

In June this year Sheffield Mum Jenny Walker was diagnosed with Stage 4 bowel cancer. A mum to three young girls, Nia (6), Cora (4) and Beth (1) this news was a shocking blow to her whole family. The aggressive nature of the disease means it has failed to respond to treatment and Jenny now only has limited time left.

Despite her devastating diagnosis Jenny and her family have used their time to fundraise a huge amount for charity and raise awareness of Bowel Cancer. As a close friend of Thornbridge Brewery we have been astounded by her bravery and wanted to find a way to show our support.

On Friday 9th November our flagship beer Jaipur will be renamed to ‘JenPour’ and will be poured in all of our pubs across Sheffield, The Cricket Inn, The Hallamshire House, The Greystones, The Stags Head, The Coach and Horses, The Cross Scythes and The Bath Hotel. All proceeds from sales of ‘Jenpour’ on the 9th November will then be donated to Weston Park Hospital.

Weston Park Hospital is the region’s only specialist cancer hospital, providing care for thousands of patients across South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire and North Nottinghamshire. They require over £2million a year to continue providing treatment and support to people during this time, and we want to contribute to this.

Thornbridge want to raise £5,000 for Weston Park so will also be running a fantastic raffle throughout the month of November. Raffle tickets will be sold within our pubs and other venues throughout Sheffield. The raffle will be drawn at Thornbridge’s Taproom social, on Wednesday 28th November.

Simon Webster, Chief Executive Officer of Thornbridge Brewery says:

“Jenny was one of our first employees at Thornbridge when Jim and I started the business and was great to have on board. When we found out about her situation we got to thinking about how we could add something to the fantastic fund raising she had already done. As we knew Jenny, we thought she’d be up for the challenge of succeeding Jaipur, for one day at least!

Typically, she thought it a great idea and is joining in what should be a great way of raising money for an amazing cause and also leaving another footprint of her life that will live on in everyone’s memory. Whilst always urging everyone to drink responsibility Id also urge them all to give the JenPour a kicking on Friday night – lets raise as much money as possible and raise a glass to a great woman!”

Thornbridge & Co. York pub due for December opening.

Market Porter
Thornbridge & Co. York pub due for December opening.
Date: 11th October 2018

Thornbridge Brewery have teamed up with Pivovar to open 10 new Thornbridge and Co. pub sites nationwide over the next five years. Planning has now been approved to open a city centre pub in York, transforming a 1960s three storey build into an elegant, Georgian style traditional pub overlooking the city.

The Thornbridge and Co. Pub, to be named The Market Porter, will  open in the heart of York city centre, taking over a 1960s corner building in Jubbergate. Work starts next week to transform the building into a traditional corner pub with an elegant and timeless new look, synonymous with the Thornbridge Brand. The Three storey building offers stunning views over the picturesque city and is due to open by the end of this year.

The site was a perfect find, reminding the team of a traditional London corner pub. One of the inspirations for the design of the exterior of the new venue was the London bar Mr Fogg’s Tavern. The doors on the ground floor will be timber-framed and glazed. Plants in troughs hanging above the doors and all aluminium doors removed and replaced with wooden frames.

Jamie Hawksworth, Owner and Director of Pivovar says:

“From seeing the buildings exterior it isn’t an attractive build. But viewing the inside we found that on the first floor there is the view straight over the market stalls. You can see all over the tops of the canopies and it looks straight down towards the Shambles. The second floor offers you views across the rooftops that look straight across to the Rose Window of the Minster.

It really is one of the best views over York!

Simon Webster, CEO of Thornbridge Brewery says:

“Bringing Thornbridge & Co. to York is something we’re very excited about. It’s a beautiful city with a wonderful craft beer community and we cant wait to be a part of it! It’s also a great opportunity to have the freedom to turn this 1960s build into a welcoming, attractive pub that we think will fit brilliantly within York. We think our beer will be a great addition to the local people and the tourists that come and go through the city.”

The pub will serve fantastic beer, great food and become an integral part of the thriving community in York. Thornbridge & Co. want to take this building and transform from what was considered one of the most unattractive buildings in York, to a visually beautiful and elegant place to show off York whilst enjoying great food and craft beer on all levels.

Moving into 2019 Thornbridge and Co. are also looking at sites in London, Manchester, Brighton and Leeds.

Delighted to announce our partnership with Pivovar
Date: 20th December 2017

We are very excited to be joining forces with craft beer distributor and pub company, Pivovar, to open new Thornbridge and Co. sites across the UK.

Together we will create ten new sites over the next five years across the country. Thornbridge and Co. pubs will provide an expanding market with a quality craft offering and the opportunity for the full range of Thornbridge beers to be available to more people.

Both our businesses have a fantastic standing within the industry, we have been brewing for 13 years with a wealth of awards. and currently runs 8 pubs in Sheffield, and the award winning Pivovar group currently own 8 bars across the UK as well as their nationwide craft beer wholesale business.

Pivovar and ourselves are delighted to announce we have secured our first site in the heart of Birmingham and have viewed a number of other premises in other cities. We are incredibly keen to open sites in Manchester, Bristol, Hull and London amongst other cities.

Thornbridge Brewery CEO Simon Webster said:

“We could not be more excited to announce this partnership, having worked with Pivovar for many years we know they are a fantastic company who share our core values. We have a real passion for pubs and want to introduce our beers to a wider market. This gives us the opportunity to work towards ensuring our beer is present in every corner of the country!”

Jamie Hawksworth, Owner of Pivovar added:

“Over the last 12 years we have created award winning bars supported by our own drinks wholesale division which delivers supply chain within our estate. We are now thrilled to be joining forces with our friends at Thornbridge to roll out more amazing bars offering access to their beer range alongside our existing drinks portfolio.”

We have worked alongside each other since the opening of the Sheffield Tap some eight years ago and are excited to be expanding our offerings across cities with their partnership.

The Wednesday Tap

Weds Tap
The Wednesday Tap
Date: 30th November 2017

We are very excited to be working together with Sheffield Wednesday FC in creating The Wednesday Tap

The Wednesday Tap replaces the Sheridan Suite and will be open seven days a week from 12.00pm to 11.00pm, inclusive of all fixtures at Hillsborough.

The new venture extends the our partnership with Sheffield Wednesday, which was established earlier this season.

The brewery will now host a further range of ales at the Wednesday Tap, which will feature theme nights, quizzes, live football, food offers and more!

Our CEO Simon Webster said: When we started supplying The Wednesday Pale Ale and Owls Session IPA to the club, I think we were all amazed at how strong the sales were.

It got us thinking what else we could do together and the obvious choice was a new pub! We identified the Sheridan Suite as an ideal venue and the Thornbridge and SWFC teams have worked brilliantly together to get this project off the ground and open in time for this weekend.

Sheffield Wednesdays head of catering Rob Cox added: When we launched The Wednesday beer, it was about giving the fans something that was theirs, something unique that they could identify with.

We then felt we needed somewhere our fans could enjoy the new beer, not just the kiosks or the lounges on matchday. So working with Thornbridge, we thought about a pub of our own that can open throughout the week.

With this being our 150th anniversary, the perfect name is The Wednesday Tap - a real pub with real local ales situated in the heart of Hillsborough. We are really excited by the whole concept and we are confident it will be well received by our fans and people of Sheffield alike.

The Wednesday Tap opens it doors for the first time this Saturday, 2 December.

On matchdays, an over 18s only policy will be in operation until after the final whistle.

Parking is available on non-matchdays via Leppings Lane only, with access under the South Stand.

We look forward to seeing you there for a pint!

Mr Smith Goes to Thornbridge to brew his Gose for Waitrose

Thornbridge Brewery, in partnership with Waitrose and Brew UK, has announced the winner of the 2017 Great British Homebrew Challenge - a watermelon-infused beer brewed by digital designer, Josh Smith.

The Gose, a German style of beer, is named Mr Smith Gose to... after the well-known 1939 Frank Capra Mr Smith Goes to Washington and made with watermelon juice. It will be available in Waitrose shops from the 13th November.

The Great British Homebrew Challenge, now in its fourth year, sets out to find the best home-brewed beer in the country.  The winning recipe, chosen by a panel of experts including Thornbridge Head Brewer, Rob Lovatt, and Waitrose beer buyer, Sarah Hammond, is brewed by Thornbridge and sold at Waitrose shops across the country.

This year, the winning beer was brewed by Stoke Newington resident Josh, 32, who has been brewing at home for five years.

The beer was inspired by a watermelon, feta and mint salad recipe I really like. Watermelon works so well with salty flavours and I naturally made the connection to Gose -  a sour and salty beer. I had tried Mello watermelon juice from Waitrose and was impressed by how much flavour it had, so used that in my beer. I’m so excited for Waitrose customers to try it, as I think it’s quite unusual. This beer can be made into Mexican inspired cocktails too, like Michelada, and is also delicious mixed with tequila and lime.

Rob Lovatt: Joshs beer really stood out amongst very strong competition in the final judging stage, with the level of quality instantly shining through. We have been brewing quite a few sour beers recently, but not with Watermelon yet, so this will be a very interesting one for us.

Sarah Hammond, Waitrose beer buyer, says: I always look forward to judging on this panel, as the beers created in this country by people in their kitchens and sheds are always so innovative and fun. This beer is no exception and is the first watermelon beer we’ve launched.

Fullers and Friends Collaboration

Fullers and Friends Collaboration
Date: 26th September 2017

Fullers and Friends sees Fullers team up with Cloudwater Brew Company, Fourpure Brewing Company, Hardknott Brewery, Marble Beers Limited, Moor Beer Company and Thornbridge Brewery to create six new collaboration beers packaged together that will be exclusive to Waitrose within the grocery market.

With a different Fullers brewer working with each brewery, these collaboration beers are certainly varied. The six pack includes a dry-hopped lager with Fourpure, a New Zealand Saison with Marble, a red rye ale with Thornbridge, a New England IPA with Cloudwater, a smoked Porter with Hardknott and a homage to Extra Special Bitter with Moor Beer. Each beer has been brewed at Fullers Brewery in Chiswick. Six members of the Fullers brewing team have been partnered up with each brewer and together have created new recipes, worked through the whole brewing process from beginning to end, designed the artwork for the bottle labels and given it a name.

Our beer is Flora and the Griffin, a 7% Red Rye Ale. This punchy red ale is made with a diverse range of ingredients including spicy rye malt and bold, floral American hops. Made in collaboration with Derbyshire’s Thornbridge, it’s named after the symbols of both breweries, Flora and The Griffin.

John Keeling, Fullers Global Ambassador, said “It has been a privilege to be able to welcome these six brewers to Fuller’s home to create these new beers. I have always enjoyed doing collaborations and to extend this to include brewers from other breweries all over the country seemed like it would be such fun for everyone.

“Collaborating on beers is much more effective when meeting a brewer face to face. Collaboration is not just about agreeing a recipe then brewing a beer, it is a great way to make friends. So Georgina and I asked Rob at Thornbridge, Dave at Hardknott, Dan at Fourpure, Justin at Moor, James at Cloudwater and JK at Marble, all of whom I knew, some I had already brewed with but all were friends, to get involved. What better way to get the team at Fuller’s to experience the full meaning of collaboration than for them to work with these great brewers?

Fullers and Friends mixed six pack will be exclusive to exclusive to Waitrose within the grocery market and will be available later this year in time for Christmas.

Location: Thornbridge Hall Brewery, Ashford in the Water

This week we had our friend Ed Cosens, of Reverend and the Makers, over once again to brew a beer with us!

This time, up at Thornbridge Hall we brewed something a little different. The beer of choice was a Thai Pale Ale, this was brewed with Kafir Lime Leaves & lemongrass. With the addition of Goldings hops, this beer is sublimely refreshing with delicious floral notes and at 4.5% this is a sessionable beer perfect for a summers day in the beer garden!

Ed decided to name the beer "Django" after the legendary, late French jazz guitarist Jean "Django" Reinhardt. This follows on from the muscial theme of some of the other beers Ed has brewed with us including Costello.

Django will be avilable at the June Brewery Socials and look out for it at the Thornbridge Taps!

Great Get Together Pale Ale

Great get together

Adnams Brews “Great Get Together” Beer with Jo Cox Foundation

Great Get Together Pale Ale in Cask & 660ml Bottles

Adnams, the Suffolk-based brewer and distiller, have joined with over a dozen fellow brewers, suppliers and the Jo Cox Foundation to produce a limited-edition pale ale. We are so pleased to be involved with this, to join some great brewers, to create a great beer for a fantastic cause.

It is called The Great Get Together and it is bringing people together with their neighbours to share food and drink and celebrate all that we hold in common.

The idea for the beer came from an old mate of Brendan Cox, James Grugeon, who runs a social enterprise beer company The Good Beer Co. He thought it would be good to have a beer to help people celebrate and Brendan agreed enthusiastically.

James then contacted Adnams Head Brewer, Fergus Fitzgerald, who contacted other breweries and something ground breaking happened.

In keeping with the ideals of The Great Get Together, Great Get Together Pale Ale is a collective effort.  Adnams have teamed up with Arkells, Cliff Quay, Elgoods, Fullers, Harviestoun, Joseph Holts, Joules, J W Lees, Marstons, Palmers, St Austell, Theakstons, Thornbridge and Woodfordes, Simpsons Malt, Charles Faram & Ol alongside social enterprise, The Good Beer Co. to create a beer to help people across the UK enjoy their Great Get Togethers with family, friends, colleagues, neighbours and their local community.

"When Brendan first said he loved the idea of a beer, I thought we would be working with one company. Then I called Fergus at Adnams and he brought another 14 breweries on board and five suppliers who have donated the ingredients, the bottles, the labels and more, said James Grugeon, The Good Beer Co Founder.

"The number of organisations that have collaborated to brew this beautiful beer is just fantastic. It is testament to how much support there is for the Great Get Together and we hope it helps everyone to celebrate and help raise funds for the Jo Cox Foundation at the same time,” he added.

The profits from the Great Get Together Pale Ale will go to the Jo Cox Foundation. Funds raised will support their work to bring together communities across the UK.

“It is very exciting to have our very own Great Get Together Pale Ale. For those who enjoy getting together with their neighbours over a beer - this ale will help thousands of people across the country enjoy their Get Together weekend a little bit more,”

For more information about The Great Get Together and a full list of where you can buy Great Get Together Pale Ale visit https://www.greatgettogether.org/

Find out more about the Jo Cox Foundation at https://www.jocoxfoundation.org/

The Great Get Together Pale Ale will be sold across many of Adnams pubs and available in Adnams Stores in the run up to the great get together.

Days of Creation

DOC1
Days of Creation
Date: 30th May 2017

Winner of a Silver Medal at the World Beer Cup in 2016 - Our Sour Red Ale, Days of Creation, has returned.

After using a Belgian yeast strain to give the beer a good foundation on which to build, we aged Days of Creation in Burgundy barrels with raspberries for well over a year.

We added cultures of Brettanomyces, Pediococcus and Lactobacillus at set points to sour the beers gradually over time.

The rich fruit aroma and flavours complement the sharp sourness which subsides for more malt and yeast character to come through. Lively, dry and thirst quenching, this is a beer to savour.

Northern Black- A new Jamaican Stout

Steve Papa Edwards
Northern Black- A new Jamaican Stout
Date: 17th May 2017
Location: Thornbridge Hall Brewery, Ashford in the Water

This week we had the honour of welcoming our friend Steve Papa Edwards to The Thornbridge Hall Brewery to brew a special collaboration with the legendary singer from just down the road in Sheffield.

The beer will be a Jamaican Stout, a style of beer linked to Steves heritage from that part of the world. It is a robust 5% Stout brewed with Muscovado Sugar which gives the beer a delcious hint of Caribbean rum. The complex dark malt recipe in this beer creates an excellent balance with the sugars used.

Steve is well known for working with a lot of big-name artists including Basement Jaxx & Richard Hawley. However, the name Northern Black comes from his first solo project and is the title track of his debut solo album of the same name.

Northern Black discusses Steves upbringing in the UK as a black man, but also as a northerner. Steve discusses the direction the album took in his recent feature in Exposed Magazine; "Things can be very London-centric but things are very different here. My parents are Jamaican, but my father was a miner – there’s the two cultures there."

Check out the full feature in Exposed Magazine at: exposedmagazine.co.uk

Nothern Black Jamaican Stout will be available very soon, look out for it in the Thornbridge Taps!

Beer Day Britain Collaboration

Jane Peyton
Beer Day Britain Collaboration
Date: 10th May 2017
Location: Thornbridge Hall Brewery, Derbyshire

This week we collaborated with Jane Peyton, award winning beer sommelier, drinks educator, writer, founder of the School of Booze to brew something very special for Beer Day Britain at Thornbridge Hall, Godiva!

This is a 4.5% a Rye IPA using a new British Godiva hop (CF127). Jane noted that "collaborating on the Godiva beer for Beer Day Britain and brewing with a new English hop has been terrific. I hope fans of Thornbridge beer will raise a glass of Godiva during the National Cheers To Beer on June 15th at 7pm and say Cheers To Beer!"

The Godiva hop gains its name from the legends of Lady Godiva as the hop is completely leafless! We are very excited to use this new hop, with the vibrant and fragrant aromas and flavours it exudes, it should also have great appeal to drinkers who enjoy New World hops.

The focus of the actual Beer Day Britain day is the National Cheers To Beer at 7pm when people raise a glass and say ‘Cheers To Beer’.  In 2015 and 2016 the National Cheers to Beer happened not only in the UK but in several countries around the world and the hashtag trended on Twitter (#CheerstoBeer).

Faux Lord
Faux Lord it up to win a year long supply of Thornbridge beer!
Date: 3rd April 2017

Have you always wanted to become the Lord or Lordess of the Manor? Now you can as we are giving one lucky person the chance to become the new “Faux Lord” or “Faux Lordess” of Thornbridge, winning a years supply of beer in the process.

The competition is part of our new “Faux Lord - Real Beer” campaign which aims to reignite the spirit of George Marples who became the self-appointed “Lord Marples” after buying Thornbridge Hall in 1896."Faux Lords. They’re our kind of people." says Simon Webster, CEO of Thornbridge, "They don’t have the blue blood, but they have the imagination and the drive to succeed whilst having some fun along the way."

Our favourite was George Marples of Thornbridge Hall. He had no official title, so he made one up, declaring himself Lord Marples, renovating the Hall and building a private railwaystation so the Queen could visit. It has now been over one hundred years since George Marples ignored the facts and declared himself “Lord Marples” of Thornbridge Hall.

So it is time to crown the new “Faux Lord” of Thornbridge. Strike a suitably noble pose and post your picture on Instagram using  #Fauxlorditup & tagging @Thornbridge. Describe what you are the Faux Lord of and why you should win free beer for a year and a takeover of Thornbridge Hall.

More New Beer! Huck & Valravn
Date: 8th November 2016
Location: Thornbridge Riverside Brewery

We are extremely pleased to add another TWO brand new beers to the Thornbridge bottle range!

Huck- Double IPA 7.4%

Huck is absolutely bursting with flavourful Simcoe, Amarillo and Mosaic hops. Aromas of grapefruit, mango, lychee and tropical fruit explode from the beer before coming through powerfully in the taste, it finishes with a hugely moreish bitterness.

Valravn- Imperial Black IPA 8.8%

Based on Thornbridge classic, Wild Raven, this beer really packs a punch with higher concentrations of new world hops combined with dark malts that result in a fantastically eclectic and complex flavour. Tropical fruit flavours combine expertly with hints of dark chocolate and coffee. A dangerously drinkable beer!

These beers are available to buy now with FREE DELIVERY from our Online Shop.

Great British Home Brew Challenge 2016 Winner- Phil Sisson

Great British Home Brew Challenge 2016 Winner- Phil Sisson

Raindrops on Roses – The Winner of the Great British Home Brew Challenge 2016

We are delighted to announce that the winner of the 2016 Great British Home Brew Challenge, supported by Brew UK, Waitrose and Thornbridge Brewery, is Phil Sisson with Raindrops on Roses (5.3%) – a Belgian Wit style beer, brewed with rose petals.

Phil, who recently moved from London to Scotland with his wife and daughter, says, "This is a huge, and completely unexpected honour for me! I am absolutely flabbergasted. I have been a big admirer of Thornbridge beer for years and it is just fantastic to have been able to impress the judges with my own creation. I originally brewed the beer as a present for my wifes birthday and my daughter chose the musical-themed name, so it is a truly family affair. I am really looking forward to seeing it on the shelves at Waitrose."

Phils beer was chosen as the winner, from over 100 that had been submitted, by an expert panel of judges including Rob Lovatt, Head Brewer at Thornbridge, Greg Hughes, Director at BrewUK and Sarah Hammond, Waitrose Beer Buyer.

Rob Lovatt, says, “The beer Phil brewed was undoubtedly well made with the roses working in a beautiful harmony with the camomile and coriander. A worthy winner from a great selection of beers that were submitted to the challenge which goes from strength to strength. I enjoyed tasting Raindrops on Roses and working with Phil to recreate this and I am sure it will be very popular”.

Sarah Hammond, Waitrose Beer Buyer, says, ‘“We loved the fact that we could distinguish the traditional style of beer that it is based on, and that it came with a really modern and well-judged twist. The palate was refreshing and full of flavour, and all the elements were really well-balanced - distinct yet not overpowering. A great combination of delicacy, interest and full of flavour, this is an excellent homebrew that we hope our customers will enjoy as much as we did.”

Raindrops on Roses, (330ml) will be available in 70 Waitrose branches from the 14th of November.

The Heart Desires

THD website
The Heart Desires
Date: 20th October 2016
Location: Thornbridge Barrel Room

The latest addition to The Barrel Room Series, The Heart Desires!

The Heart Desires is part of a project we have been working on at the brewery for a few years now. We wanted to create a modern sour aged in barrels, with the same complexity and depth of flavour which our favourite sours from the USA offer.

This beer started life as a simple blonde ale with low bitterness and was fermented with our house yeast. We then aged this in Burgundy barrels with gooseberries for well over a year. Adding cultures of Brettanomyces, Pediococcus and Lactobacillus at set points let us sour the beer gradually over many months and give layers of flavour that can only be developed over time.

The fruit aroma and flavours complement the sharp sourness which subsides for more malt and yeast character to come through. The resulting beer is a clean, zingy and intense blend of fruit tartness with intimations of crisp Sauvignon Blanc grapes.

The Heart Desires is available now from our Online Shop. This is in very limited supply so grab some before its gone!

Brand New KHS Bottling Line

Bottling line
Brand New KHS Bottling Line
Date: 28th September 2016
Location: Thornbridge Riverside Brewery

Here at Thornbridge we are driven by our desire to provide a product of the finest quality and we know that this doesn’t just stop once our beer has left the brewery. We bottle everything on site here in Bakewell and this allows us to personally guarantee the quality of the finished product. With this in mind, we have recently invested in a brand new £1m KHS bottling line. Our current one has done a sterling job in getting us this far, but it’s time to move forward.

As Head Brewer, Rob Lovatt, explains ‘It is the Rolls-Royce of bottling lines; its technology will enable us to achieve extremely low levels of dissolved oxygen in the bottle, it will future proof the growth of the brewery and will prove to be an extremely robust piece of kit with greatly reduced downtime. The bottom line is that we are putting our beer first’.

As part of this progression we have also looked at the design of our bottles and, whilst we have enjoyed working with our distinctive 500ml offerings, we are not afraid of change and after talking with many different people who enjoy our beers, it’s become clear that moving to 330ml will provide a more practically convenient option and allow the opportunity to try more of the beers within our range. We will make this move to the different bottle and though they will be smaller, they will be providing our beer brewery fresh for even longer!

Overall this has been a very exciting time for us here at Thornbridge Brewery and we’re looking forward to this next step in our evolution.

Bristol Beer Week

Bristol beer week roundup
Bristol Beer Week
Date: 5th September 2016

We have just got back from Bristol Beer Week and we had an absolute blast with the Bristolians at Small Bar & Bristol Craft Beer Festival

We arrived in Bristol on Thursday for our Tap Takeover at Small Bar which also included a special tasting event with the good folk at The Bristol Cheesemonger. It was a fantastic evening and the beer and cheese matching went down a storm and was packed to the rafters.

There was a generally fantastic vibe at Small Bar as the tap takeover continued afterwards with an awesome range of beer in one of Bristols finest drinking establishments.

On Friday, the fun continued as we went to Bristol Craft Beer Festival where we amongst 30 other breweries showcased a range of Thornbridge beers including I Love You Will U Marry Me, Cocoa Wonderland & Fika.

It was a great event and we thoroughly enjoyed manning the Thornbridge bar and getting the chance to meet Thornbridge fans from the south-west amongst and from much further afield.

Thanks very much to everyone that came along to see us at Small Bar & BCBF and we are already looking forward to Bristol Beer Week 2017.

The day has finally come, our new bottling line arrived piece by piece at Thornbridge Riverside Brewery this morning!

The packaging line from German company KHS will see the brewery gain significant advantages when it comes to bottling. The new filler will provide greater levels of efficiency with faster output and reduced down time.

Additionally, with what Head Brewer, Rob Lovatt, describes as "the Rolls Royce of bottling lines" we can produce even higher quality beer as Rob notes, it "will enable us to achieve extremely low levels of dissolved oxygen in the bottle". An attribute that will result in even fresher tasting beer.

Check out The Brewers Blog as Rob discusses the new bottling line and why he believes this method is the best path for Thornbridge Brewery versus canning.

Magic Rock Collaboration Brew
Date: 7th June 2016
Location: Thornbridge Riverside Brewery

Last week we had the pleasure of welcoming the guys from Magic Rock Brewing to Thornbridge for a collaboration brew!

Richard & Stuart made the short trip from Huddersfield to our Bakewell brewery to brew our take on a classic Germanic style.

The beer being brewed is an Altbier, this is a style of beer which originates in Dusseldorf, they are typically cool-fermented and lagered, copper-coloured ales. This is style of beer has a rich history with it being brewed in the Rhineland capital since the early 1800s.

We are very excited that this beer will be launched at Peakender 2016, our Festival of Beer in July. Come along and be one of the first to try it!

Serpent
Serpent, Creating New Beer Boundaries. A Thornbridge, Brooklyn Brewery Collaboration
Date: 1st June 2016
Location: Thornbridge Riverside Brewery

Our Barrel-aged collaboration with The Brooklyn Brewery is available now!

Serpent is the first beer of its kind, and one of the coolest things either brewery has ever done.

We went to Oliver’s Cider in Hereford seeking their lees, the natural wild yeasts that ferment their apples into great traditional ciders. We brewed a robust Belgian-inspired golden ale at Thornbridge, added the lees in barrels, aged the beer for more than a year, and bottle conditioned it.

Now Serpent emerges dry, tart, firm, fine and funky, a full expression of our friendship, great British brewing, American boldness, and Herefordshire countryside.

New investment at our Riverside Brewery

Riverside
New investment at our Riverside Brewery
Date: 5th April 2016
Location: Thornbridge Riverside Brewery

We are delighted, as we move into our second decade of brewing, to announce a new £2m investment plan for our Riverside brewery. The funding will provide us with a new bottling line, increased brewing capacity and improved warehousing and logistics facilities.

We have seen considerable growth in our UK and International sales in recent years and we are targeting an 80% increase in turnover over in the next three years. But it’s not all about equipment though as, in preparation for a 70% expansion to our brewing capacity, we have employed an additional 11 staff to take our overall employee numbers to 46.

After an extensive search for a bottling line supplier by our Head Brewer Rob Lovatt, we have selected German company KHS GmbH. The quality of our beer is, of course, paramount to us and with almost 50% of our beer sales being in bottles it is critical that we have the best, most technically up to date bottling line to ensure a quality beer time after time. KHS is a market leader in filling and packaging lines, with over 140 years of experience, so we are in good hands. Our brewing team is always looking for continuous improvement in all of our processes and the new equipment will enable us to achieve extremely low levels of dissolved oxygen in the beer and so retain greater taste and freshness.

Phase 1 of the brewery expansion, including the new bottling line, is expected to be completed by late summer.

Global interest in UK Independent Craft Beer at an all-time high

Global interest in UK Independent Craft Beer at an all-time high
Date: 16th March 2016

Thornbridge and The Stags Head, Sheffield are pleased to be hosting visitors from UKTI  for a pub experience pub on March 17th as part of our Sheffield Beer Week celebrations.

British independent craft beer is in high demand on the global market according to UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) Yorkshire and the Humber and the Society for Independent Brewers (SIBA).

UKTI, the government department that helps UK companies succeed abroad and supports overseas companies wanting to invest in Britain, has organised fully-booked ‘Meet the Buyer’ events at SIBA’s BeerX conference in Sheffield this week and says British beer from small, independent craft-brewers has never been so popular globally, with a total of 12 countries sending delegates to Britain’s biggest brewing trade show.

BeerX has incorporated the international export activity into the packed roster of events following huge demand from buyers from beer brewing powerhouse countries such Belgium, Germany and the Czech Republic, as well as other markets including China, Iceland, Greece, Ukraine. France, Australia, Denmark, Cyprus, Sweden and India.

“British independent craft brewers are seizing the global demand for their flavoursome, unique beers with both hands and exporting in higher numbers than ever before. The sessions being run by UKTi at BeerX are designed to create a platform for SIBA’s members looking to begin exporting, or increase the markets they already sell to, to speak directly with international buyers,” said Mike Benner, SIBA Managing Director.

Stephen Noblett, an international trade advisor and food and drink sector specialist at UKTI Yorkshire and the Humber who organised the fully-booked export sessions at BeerX, said: “This is the largest delegation of overseas buyers that UKTI Yorkshire and the Humber has ever attracted to BeerX.

“The record breaking attendance reflects recent research by UKTI which showed about 75 per cent of food and drink exporters expected overseas sales to increase over the next quarter.”

Stephen said expert advice on the development of specific markets followed by licensing, regulation and documentation were among the areas of most interest for food and drink companies seeking expert guidance from UKTI trade advisors.

With more than 300 breweries in attendance, BeerX promises to be a true showcase of the best beer from the UK’s independent craft brewers and runs from the 16th to the 19th of March at iceSheffield.

More information about the public beer festival, or ‘BeerX - Festival of Beer’, is available at http://beerx.org/festivalofbeer/

A Very Eventful Weekend

A Very Eventful Weekend
Date: 29th February 2016
Location: Bristol, London, Munich

We were very busy at the weekend as we had events in Bristol, London and even Munich!

The trip to Bristol saw Chris, our Thornbridge Hall brewer take over The Navy Volunteer pub as we took 29 different beers to The West Country!

The Bristolians were out in force as they emptied the vast majority of the kegs and casks we brought down.

Back along the M4, Alex & James were in East London for Craft Beer Rising 2016! With nearly 150 breweries in attendance this was the biggest incarnation of the event to date.

A sell out crowd came along to The Old Truman Brewery for the event and the Thornbridge bar was very busy with festival goers.

Our Bourbon Oak Imperial Stout, Eldon was particularly well received amongst the other lovely beers we brought including Halcyon and I Love You Will U Marry Me.

Lastly, we were also in action in Bavaria as we went along to Braukunst Live in Munich over the weekend. With over 100 exhibitors showcasing beers from all around the world it really was a fantastic event that we did with our friends in Germany from Hofmark Brauerie.

Saint Petersburg, our Imperial Russian Stout was particularly well received as we received a bronze in the Champion Winter Beer of Britain 2015/16 competition as well as receiving Gold in the CAMRA East Midlands Regional Competition!

Also our 6% Well Hopped Pale Ale, Otters Tears, brewed in memory of the late, well loved beer writer, Simon Johnson was a hit at NWAF as the 36 gallons we brought were quickly consumed.

Thanks to everyone at CAMRA for helping to organise such a great event and to everyone that came along, it was a record breaking event with over 13,800 people in attendance and a staggering 57,000 pints drunk!

I Love You Will U Marry Me

iloveyoufinland
I Love You Will U Marry Me
Date: 11th February 2016

As we are coming up to Valentines Day weekend, a lot of people think it is all about Prosecco & oysters, but we have managed to prove beer can be romantic too.

As has happened a few times with our 4.5% Strawberry Blonde Ale we released last year, I Love You Will U Marry Me has recently played a big part in a wedding proposal!

This time the couple, Karoliina & Niko, massive beer fans from Finland became engaged to each other just before Christmas 2015 when Karoliina decided to propose with our beer.

They first became familiar with the beer as they stopped in a bar for a drink on the way to their friends housewarming in Helsinki and it was on tap there;

"We thought that the name was refreshingly positive and silly, and the beer was actually good too."

Fast forward to late December 2015, they had arranged to meet up for a drink before they both went home to their respective families for Christmas. Niko also had his birthday coming up on the 24th, so this gave Karoliina the chance to give him a very special gift;

"I first started to suspect that this wasn’t going to be a night just like the others when she set up a camera on the table next to us and told me that she was going to tape the whole process of me opening my present. I found it a bit odd but decided to play along anyway, as I thought it was just another one of her eccentric but in the end rather cute desires."

She then went on to give Niko his present, a bottle of I Love You Will U Marry Me with her great grandfathers wedding ring attached to it, which stunned her husband to be;

"I just stared at the words “I love you will u marry me” for a long while. I mean, like really, REALLY awkwardly long. Suddenly I snapped out of it and remembered how to actually be a normal human being again. Of course I will marry you."

See the moment he said yes here.

Leading environmental writer and activist Mark Cocker - Evening Guest Lecture ‘Birds & People’ @ Wild Thing? Conference

Wednesday 9th September, Peak Theatre, Sheffield Hallam University

Doors open 6.30pm finish 9pm

Ian Rotherham and colleagues are pleased to announce that the well-known British environmentalist, Mark Cocker is giving the evening guest lecture at the Wild Thing Conference.

Mark Cocker, author, naturalist and environmental activist, writes and broadcasts on nature and wildlife in a variety of national media. His ten books include works of biography, history, literary criticism and memoir. His last two, Claxton: Field Notes from a Small Planet (2014) and Birds and People (with photographer David Tipling), were shortlisted for six literary prizes. His previous book Crow Country was shortlisted for the Samuel Johnson Prize (2008) and won the New Angle Prize for Literature (2009). The wonderful Birds Britannica was a collaboration with Richard Mabey. For 35 years he has lived in Norfolk, where he devotes free time to restoring a small wooded fen called Blackwater with its thousands of wild inhabitants. He served on the councils of the Norfolk and Norwich Naturalists’ Society and Society’s President in 2007-8. He has had an advisory capacity to the British Trust for Ornithology from 2005-7 and in 2008, with Tim Birkhead, John Fanshawe and Jeremy Mynott, Mark co-founded New Networks for Nature. This promotes and celebrates the central place that nature plays in British cultural life through annual symposia in, for example, Oxford (2009), Thetford (2010) and Stamford (2011-2). These involve an enormous range of creative professionals whose work draws on nature and landscape.

Birds and People by Mark Cocker and David Tipling, published to worldwide acclaim in 2013, is a global survey of the cultural place of birds in human lives. This new presentation about the book explores how birds have given wing to our creative imaginations for thousands of years. Cocker discovers why birds have been such a major source of creativity. Environmentalism, Mark argues, undersells the significance of nature and overlooks how biological shrinkage impacts, not just upon wildlife diversity, but as major cultural deficit. The Wildtrack Bookshop will be there and some of Mark’s books available too.

Managing Landscape Change & Future Ecologies: Cultural Severance & Continuity

9th to 11th September 2015, Sheffield Showroom & Workstation, Sheffield, UK

Following the highly successful meeting in May 2014, Ian Rotherham and colleagues are organising a major, international, 3-day conference on the theme of ‘Wilder By Design’. The 2014 event raised fundamental issues including the following Themes & Issues:

- Understanding concepts of ‘wild’, ‘re-wilding’ and ‘wilderness’ in urban and rural settings, asindividuals and for different communities;

- The language used to discuss concepts and how they are represented and communicated to the widerworld;

-The political, economic and social contexts and drivers for change;

- The short and longer-term impacts of change;

-How underlying change affects ability to create, manage and sustain future landscapes.

- What wild and wilderness mean to individuals.

With a critical view of projects, issues and perspectives from across the world as well as the UK, we will be developing these ideas and paradigms. The conference will examine concepts of cultural severance and the eco-cultural nature of landscapes as well as addressing critical issues around (re) wilding in both rural and urban situations. The paradigms of wilder landscapes and the interactions between nature and culture, between history and ecology, and between climate, people and nature, will make for a continuing and rich discussion.

The first day, (9th Sept.), starts mid-morning with presentations through the day and a guest lecture in the evening. The following two days will mix plenary and parallel sessions with a dedicated poster presentation session on the Thursday afternoon (10th Sept). A conference dinner will be held on the Thursday evening.

Speakers include Rob Lambert, Frans Vera, George Peterken, Mauro Agnoletti, Adrian Newton, Alastair Driver, Peter Bridgewater, Ted Green, Keith Alexander, Jill Butler, Della Hooke, Ian Rotherham, Peter Taylor, Rob Lambert, Steve Carver, Sue Everett, Chris Spray, Jim McAdam, Tomasz Samojlik, Kenneth Olwig, Tom Williamson, Kieran Sheehan, and many others. Chris and Anne-Marie Smout will be attending as guests of honour. Public keynote lecture on Wednesday evening by Mark Cocker. Conference proceedings on cd-rom: available at the event; and a major book(s) will be published post-conference.

International Thornbridge Bar To Open

Netherlands
International Thornbridge Bar To Open
Date: 6th August 2015
Location: Netherlands

Thornbridge beers are gaining popularity worldwide with exports growing in over 30 countries during the past 5 years. And as the number of their international beer fans grow "Partnerships with importers and those managing bars that stock Thornbridge are crucial to ensure our beers reach the drinker in the best of condition" says Simon Webster, Chief Operating Officer from Thornbridge.

Paul Leeyen has been stocking Thornbridge beers for 3 years at his bar in Den Bosch in the Netherlands and has been delighted with the response from his customers "High quality and a great variety of beer styles sets Thornbridge amongst the top breweries we deal with. Working with them and their importer, Bier&cO, has been a really positive experience".

Paul has been so delighted with his Thornbridge partnership that he approached the brewery about the idea of opening a Thornbridge Bar in Den Bosch. "After visiting the brewery in late 2014 I was blown away by the passion for their beers that everyone at Thornbridge demonstrated. I knew that if I could find the correct site in sHertogenbosch  then a Thornbridge bar would be a great success". After months of looking for the right site Paul has now found one and has been busy working with Thornbridge and Bier&cO with an aim of opening the Thornbridge at sHertogenbosch on the 4th September.

Webster is excited by the concept "It really continues what we have been doing in the UK and on export - find and work with people who are as passionate about beer as we are and have skills that complement what we wish to do with Thornbridge beers. In Bier&cO we have an experienced importer and likewise with Paul. When we visited his current bar in sHertogenbosch, we knew our beers were in safe hands. So when he approached us to develop the Thornbridge Bar it excited us and it has been a lot of fun planning what we are sure will be a great success".

I Love You Will You Marry Me - Strawberry Blonde Ale
Date: 16th June 2015
Location: Sheffield Pubs

Last weekend we released our brand new beer ‘I Love You Will U Marry Me’, a Strawberry Blonde Ale. The name comes from Park Hill Flats where this wording was painted onto one of the bridges facing Sheffield city centre as a marriage proposal and we decided this bridge, of course, would be the perfect place to taste it first!

We launched this beer on Saturday across all of our pubs in Sheffield, where complimentary strawberries were given out to accompany the beer, and Peddlers Market at Park Hill Flats in Sheffield. The reception was great and we believe this is going to be the perfect summer beer!

The first batch is on keg and you will be able to find it in all the usual bars that take our keg beers, we will then be looking to bottle this very soon too, so keep an eye out!

10 Years of Jaipur!

Jaipur Day
10 Years of Jaipur!
Date: 7th June 2015

Today is the 10th anniversary of our flagship beer, Jaipur IPA!

10 years ago today Stefano Cossi & Martin Dickie (pictured) brewed our famous Jaipur IPA in a small brewery based in the grounds of Thornbridge Hall and since then the we’ve never looked back!

Jaipur was an unusual style of beer to brew in the UK and was to some extent a standalone beer here. After the beers creation on 7:6:2005, Jaipur was to be put on the map by winning Beer of the Festival at Sheffield CAMRA 2005.

In the 10 years that have passed we now export to 35 countries &  the majority of Thornbridge production has moved to the much larger Riverside site in Bakewell but Jaipur is still the beer we can’t produce fast enough!

So we raise a glass today to Jaipur IPA and cheers to the next 10 years!

Introducing Brouwerij t IJ, American Wheat Ale
Date: 12th May 2015

We have brewed a collaboration beer with Dutch brewery, Brouwerij t IJ . One of our Brewers, Ben went over to create an American Wheat beer with their head brewer, Roel and after much consideration they devised a recipe for a light refreshing beer for the summer.

American Wheat uses the highly potent Galaxy and Mosaic hops so this beer packs a delicious citrus punch. With plenty of hop aroma and a smooth finish, this should be a great beer for summer days relaxing in the beer garden.

Hailing from Amsterdam, Bouwerij’t IJ have a very recognisable querky brand and have had success with beers such as Zatte and Columbus.

New beer takes walk on Wild Side

wild side
New beer takes walk on Wild Side
Date: 10th March 2015
Location: Peak District

A new beer will celebrate 10 years of open access in the Peak District National Park and encourage visitors to walk on the Wild Side.

The Countryside and Rights of Way Act saw the public’s right of access grow from 240 sq km to more than 500 sq km, opening up a new world to be explored inside Britain’s first national park.

The freedom to roam brought large parts of the Peak District’s wilder landscape within reach of walkers, climbers, runners and wildlife enthusiasts, allowing visitors to wander at will without keeping to public paths.

To mark the anniversary, Bakewell-based Thornbridge Brewery, which also celebrates its 10th birthday this year, has created a new pale ale, called Wild Side.

It will be officially launched with tours of the Riverside Brewery on March 20. Ian Rotherham, professor of environmental geography at Sheffield Hallam University, will talk about the wilder side of nature in our wilder areas and guests will be able to sample the new brew. A minimum donation of £10 is requested and all proceeds from the tour will go into the Access Fund to further improve access in the national park. Tours are at 3pm and 5pm and anyone interested should email access@peakdistrict.gov.uk.

Alex Buchanan, marketing manager at Thornbridge, said: “In 2005, when we started brewing in the grounds of Thornbridge Hall, little did we know that we would have grown to have a second brewery in Bakewell, have won over 350 awards, employ in excess of 40 staff  and export our beers to 33 countries!

“We now regularly get visitors from across the UK and the world and one of the delights is sharing with them the Peak District National Park and the great countryside that surrounds and inspires us.

“When we heard of the anniversary of open access we were keen to get involved and decided to brew a beer to celebrate.’’

Ian Rotherham said: “Access to the moors and bogs is all about nature on the wild side; the freedom of spirit and the freedom to roam.

“This is a precious heritage that has been hard won and should be savoured and celebrated. It must not be taken for granted but nurtured for future generations as a part of our birth-right.

Sue Smith, access and rights of way officer for the Peak District National Park Authority, said: Many people perhaps don’t realise that approximately a third of our national park is access land.  We hope that this anniversary beer will help inspire others to take a walk on the wild side on our hills, moors and dales. All proceeds from the brewery tours will go into the fund set up so that we can continue to improve access for the future for all to enjoy.’’

Jaipur X
Date: 7th January 2015

2015 is our tenth anniversary and to celebrate we are going to be brewing a ten percent version of our classic Jaipur.

We will be using exactly the same ingredients but in much larger amounts to scale the beer up, Jaipur X will be a release just for this year in keg and bottle so keep your eyes open and make sure you try it.

Onto 2015 and our Tenth Anniversary
Date: 30th December 2014

As 2015 approaches anticipation is building here for a year of celebration as we look forward to commemorating 10 years of brewing with an expansion in our capacity and new staff to help with it all.

It all seems a long way from 2005 when we began brewing on our second-hand kit at Thornbridge Hall. No-one had heard of us and convincing pubs to take our beers was a challenge (until they tried them….) Since the beginning we’ve had a succession of great people working for us all with a focus on the “Innovation  Passion Knowledge” required to make great beer and delight customers and our success has undoubtedly come from that.

The brewery, with the addition of the Riverside site, has been transformed in ten years and the brewing scene in the UK has also changed dramatically and we like to feel we have played our part in that. We hope to have inspired some to join us and help spread the word for good beer amongst traditional beer drinkers and those discovering what a great diverse quality, fun drink beer can be.

Countless number of people have helped us over the past 10 years – far too many to mention but to all of those that have supported us we will be raising a glass to you in 2015.  We have a number of plans for new beers (look out for Jaipur X), some old favourites returning and events including our Great Peak Weekender (July 3-5th) to mark our 10 years.  We will keep you posted on all of these - so here’s looking to many more years of Never Ordinary beers. A happy, peaceful and prosperous New Year from all the team at Thornbridge.

Inspired By The Peak District
Date: 11th November 2014
Location: Derbyshire

Here at Thornbridge we are always inspired by where we work, having our brewery located in the beautiful Peak District means it is always a pleasure making the journey in and we always love just relaxing, taking in our surroundings and taking inspiration for our next ideas.

We know that we certainly aren’t the only ones who feel like this and in working on new designs we looked to local artist and designer Matthew J I Wood knowing that he would be able to create something that expressed our love of the Peaks. He certainly didnt let us down and has created some truly unique concepts, which we are showcasing on mugs, posters and bar runners.

Here is what Matthew had to say about them;

When I was asked to produce a set of illustrations for Thornbridge Brewery, I found inspiration in the surroundings of the Brewery itself. Having a National Park on your doorstep should be celebrated, and I think it forms a big part of what Thornbridge do.
Matthew

We were very pleased that Matthew was able to find the same spark from the area that we enjoy here and this certainly comes across in the artwork. These make for a cracking present or just a treat for yourself so make sure to order here -http://thornbridgebrewery.co.uk/shop.php

It was entered into the Stouts/Porters category and just beat out Murmansk (our Baltic Porter) to claim first place, it was then entered into the final category and was voted the Overall Festival Champion, a great achievement!

Trekdrop or ‘Liquorice Pull’ was on our minds yesterday as we created an Imperial Liquorice Stout with the good chaps from Van Moll in the Netherlands. Erwin (the owner) has been selling an awful lot of our beer over in Eindhoven and hopefully will be selling this beer as well!

Erwin brought lots of Trekdrop over with him to give it an authentic Dutch touch and we are very excited for the end result! The beer will be pretty rare as we are only doing a few kegs so if you see it, try it!!

The Great British Home Brew Challenge 2014

HomeBrew News
The Great British Home Brew Challenge 2014
Date: 1st June 2014

Waitrose is teaming up with craft brewery Thornbridge and Brew UK to find this country’s best home brew.

The Home Brew Challenge 2014 launches on 1st June 2014 and will see the winning beer appear on Waitrose shelves across the UK.

Recognising the great British tradition of home brewing, the competition encourages budding home brewers to enter for the chance to see their own recipe transformed by Thornbridge into a commercial craft beer.

Waitrose Beer Buyer, Kate Prall, says, ‘This is a hugely exciting project for us, and it comes at a very important time in the history of craft breweries. The resurgence in popularity of both craft breweries and people trying out their own homemade beers means that we’re bound to get some amazing entries to our competition, which we’re looking forward to tasting.’

With over 1000 craft breweries now operating in the UK, the range of beers styles available has never been greater.

Rob Lovatt, Head Brewer at Thornbridge, explains: ‘A considerable number of home brewers develop great quality beers that can never be appreciated by a larger drinking public. The Home Brew Challenge 2014 will provide home brewers with an opportunity to match their beers against those of other enthusiasts, and have them tasted by a panel of expert beer judges. The Home Brew Challenge 2014 will be a celebration of the British tradition of

brewing with the aim of creating a great new beer and for people to try and embrace many of the new flavours in beers from across the world.’

The winning beer will be chosen by an expert panel and will be available in  Waitrose shops from October 2014.

See www.gbhomebrew.co.uk for entry details.

Our Late Hopped Pils ‘Bayern’ is available in bottles for the first time, after receiving great feedback from last years keg release we decided it was only fitting to do bottles as well.

A lot of love and attention goes into the making of a great Pilsner and our Bayern is certainly no different; it undergoes the full lagering process here at the brewery before we release it! This amount of time and the distinctive Noble hops we use help to create a beer which is clean, delicate, soft and extremely moreish.

Waving goodbye to our latest tanker heading to the the USA laden with Jaipur, Halcyon and Medici (our new India Brown Ale), I started thinking about how the American Craft Breweries have influenced the British brewing scene over the last 10 years or so. During my formative years at Meantime Brewery I visited the US numerous times and was blown away by the craft beer scene there. However, some of my favourite beers have come from closer to home and from some of the most distinguished breweries of Europe.

A Message from Rob Lovatt, Head Brewer

Robs Blog
A Message from Rob Lovatt, Head Brewer
Date: 21st March 2014

This year appears to be flying by – already 3 months since I last updated this blog.  Myself and the team have been really busy and worked really hard to get three more of our existing beers into bottle and also squeezed in the brewing and bottling of a brand new beer very close to mine and also my brew team’s hearts!

I heard a great quote recently that said “tradition is about handing on the flame not looking back into the ashes” - I like to think this reflects the way we make beer here at Thornbridge. A good example of this is with our Double Scotch  -yes a traditional beer style  - Scotch Ale - but one that can be produced today in an exciting way that reflects the past but isn’t hindered by it. So with the Thornbridge take on this I have produced a beer that is a true expression of maltiness, full bodied, with a smooth alcoholic warmth and a deliciously moreish residual caramel sweetness.  Hops need to play  a balancing act rather than being at the forefront, and so this is what I aimed for.  To add complexity, I chose to have a percentage of the beer barrel aged in Auchentoshan whisky barrels.  But the key for me was to get just the right level of whisky and wood character expressed in harmony  –  this is a beer after all not a spirit and the complex balance of aromas  and tastes, whilst a challenge, I like to think has been achieved  in a perfect blend. I hope you enjoy it as much as the team and I  had fun brewing it.

To start with Colorado Red , a beer we first brewed with Doug Odell from Odell Brewing Company, is back by popular demand and for the first time in bottle.  A Red ale at 5.9% abv and just the right amount of bitterness to balance the malt sweetness.  The reason we think this beer works so well is the complex blend of juicy British malts with a combination of several English hop varieties. I defy anyone to tell me that British hops are not as good as American hops when used in the correct way.  I feel that this is the definitive English Hopped Red ale produced in this country.

We also felt Sequoia, our American Amber would work really well in bottle format and we managed to squeeze it into the bottling schedule.  This beer uses hops from Australia, England and America to get the right hop flavours of citrus and pine and tastes really fresh and lively with the additional level of carbonation.

Our third new bottled beer is Beadeca’s Well (the orginal name for Bakewell), a recipe one of our young brewers, Ben Wood developed with a guiding hand!  This beer is a satisfying blend of roasted malts like Chocolate and Brown, with just the right hint of smoke from Bamberg Beechwood smoked malt.  The flavour intensity of smoked malt is highly variable and experience of use is required to get the right level of smokiness; we feel in Beadecas Well we have this just right.

Last year at the Hall Brewery we decided to brew a Weizenbock as part of our European series.  My team and I absolutely loved it and we decided to brew an entire batch for bottle at the Riverside brewery.  Classic in formulation and using a Bavarian strain of yeast, we employed all of the secrets of the Bavarians to maximise the flavour compounds which epitomise this very special style.  It’s a real celebratory beer and also best drunk as fresh as possible. The beer named Otto is now available in bottle and from the 24th to the 30th March 2014, you can get £5 OFF – let us know what you think.

I’d also like to let you know we have another batch of Bayern, our German Pilsener currently at 4°C where it’ll stay for the next few weeks.  We were delighted with the reception of this beer and have decided to also get this beer into bottle as soon as it has finished maturation.

We look forward to letting you know more about our future brews including a very special collaboration with our friend Garrett Oliver of Brooklyn Brewery which is currently only known as ‘Operation Serpent’. All I can tell you at this point is I have a 150 ex-Bourbon casks currently swelling in our new purpose built barrel store. ..

I’m off to judge at the Beer World Cup in Colorado a couple of weeks, we’re hoping for a couple of medals and to get some inspiration from our friends in the States.

Cheers

Rob
